Foam Profiling

What is foam profiling?

Foam profiling is the process of shaping the surface of a foam sheet into a repeating pattern of peaks and valleys. This is often referred to as convoluted foam or egg-crate foam.

The finished profile can improve airflow, reduce pressure points, increase flexibility and create a more comfortable or protective finished product.

Common uses for profiled foam

  • Mattress toppers and comfort overlays
  • Medical and pressure-relief cushioning
  • Protective packaging and transit protection
  • Seating and back-support components
  • Acoustic and specialist industrial applications

Why customers choose profiled foam

  • Improves comfort and pressure distribution
  • Encourages airflow through the foam surface
  • Can reduce overall product weight
  • Adds flexibility to thicker foam sections
  • Creates a recognisable professional finish
Profile Specification

Understanding base and rise

Two of the main dimensions used when specifying a foam profile are base and rise.

The base is the thickness of foam left at the valley. The rise is the height of the peak above that valley. Together, these dimensions influence comfort, support and flexibility.
